This proof-of-concept project will work with local steel fabricators to create and evaluate pre-qualified steel weld fabrication details for high strength steel connections having strengths up to 100 ksi. The proposed project will result in an improved understanding of high strength welded connections and improved details for these connections.
This research project aims to address the efficiency of prequalified welded connections where one component is attached at an angle (skewed) from another component. The objective of the research is to develop an improved understanding of loads acting through highly skewed welded connections having reduced weld leg dimensions to either justify or propose modifications to the prequalification detail in AWS D1.1.
Bracing for Impact seeks to address the lack of adequate pier protection on our nation’s waterways through the development and evaluation of novel steel-concrete composite pier protection/retrofit systems. The project contains two integrated research components: 1) detailed finite element analysis of retrofit pier details and 2) impact testing of retrofit details. Outcomes of this project include a direct-to-pier retrofit strategy, ultimately improving waterway infrastructure reliability.
Experimental Validation of SMF Roof-Level Connections aims to verify special moment frame (SMF) rooftop connection performance during seismic events through full-scale experimental testing and validated finite element simulations. Experiments include both one-sided and two-sided SMF rooftop connections.
